Thousands of tiny hands grip the cage bars. Their resemblance to those of

Cage after cage in row after row stretch along the subtropical valley floor.
Inside sit long-tailed macaques: the favoured monkey of the vivisectionist

Michael Budkie, the principal and driving force of Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! or SAEN! filed a complaint over what he felt was significant unwarranted redundancy of National Eye Institute-funded invasive brain experiments using monkeys

Detailed knowledge of what is happening in labs across the country is borne by relatively few activists. I doubt that there are a dozen people in the country who are as conversant with these details as Budkie; perhaps he was simply swept away by the absolute horror reflected in his data.

If you haven’t done so, look at his data. If you’ve seen it, look again.

These fifty vivisectors are responsible for a combined total of 526 years of restraining monkeys (commonly for long periods), keeping them thirsty and/or hungry, sewing coils to their eyes, drilling holes in their skulls, bolting hardware to their heads, and manipulating their brains.

No one who actually gets their head around the details Budkie points to in his data set can come away unscathed. (No human, that is; monsters might bask in this knowledge.) The suffering alluded to in the details surrounding these 526 years of experiments may be impossible to grasp. At some point, injustice and cruelty crosses a threshold that makes it impossible to describe, comprehend, or rate. Was the Holocaust worse than slavery in the Deep South? Were the Rawandan massacres worse than the Cambodian killing fields?

The real wonder is that knowledge of what is happening in the labs hasn’t led to more insistent methods of protest and resistance

The Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University (MCV) is one of many laboratories that use rhesus monkeys in drug addiction experiments. One of the projects at MCV is among the oldest in the U.S. – dragging on for 30 consecutive years and currently squanders over $400,000 per year.

According to USDA reports filed by MCV, the rhesus monkeys used in this experiment suffer from unrelieved pain and distress because they often experience the throes of drug withdrawal. Yet, this is not the only agony that they endure.

Internal documents from MCV reveal that these innocent animals experience such severe stress that they often become self-abusive. Rhesus monkey M1390 endured a lifetime of suffering at MCV:

“Arrived years ago and from the beginning had difficulty adjusting to the lab. Throughout the years several attempts were made to address his behavior problems using enrichment and various experimental protocols. He would show improvement for a period but would return to bouts of stereotypic behavior including aggression and self injurious behavior. Due to recent indications that his behavior had worsened, the PI opted to remove the animal from study and request euthanasia.”
Others have less detailed descriptions. Monkey 1463 died on December 28, 2007, “nose was pressed into his face may have died from suffocation.”

These two monkeys are not the only ones that suffered at this lab, but the others have been robbed of the minimal uniqueness of a name or number. In their quest for secrecy the officials of this lab removed many details from the documents which describe the animals whose lives play out inside MCV’s cages. I can tell you what happened, and even when, but I can’t say where or to whom. The statements which are scattered through the pages of these monkeys’ lives are unidentified and so apply to either none of these primates, or to all of them. I can’t say which.

The words used to describe one primate: “cage is covered, lots of banging, chewing on Jacket. Gums bleeding. Startles very easily.” Other phrases are no less disturbing: “took too much amphetamine agitated.” The seemingly endless days of addiction experimentation roll on for one monkey: “12/1 not working well, 12/3 not working well, 12/10 plucking on arm; 12/11 plucking on arm not working well; 12/12 pump malfunctioning dripping onto monkey; 12/18 not eating; 12/19 not eating; 12/20 not eating.” And the records for another animal are no less troubling: “12/3 threw up; 12/4 agitated during drug session; 12/6 loose in cage, zipper broken 12/7 loose in cage again no IV line sedated, throwing up post sedation; 12/10 plucking tail.”

These words do not fully describe the kind of life that primates should have. There are no trees. There is no sunshine. There is no play, no companionship, no real life. These things have been replaced by addiction and suffering. Intelligent, sensitive animals have been reduced to the status of laboratory apparatus. They have been made into devices to measure the effects of addictive drugs.

How do these animals react to this insanity that we have visited upon them? How do they respond to losing everything that is natural to them? What do they do when trees, leaves, and sunshine are replaced by stainless steel, fluorescent lights, and IV catheters? Natural plant foods are replaced by monkey chow. Natural sources of water like lakes and streams are replaced by automatic watering systems. And the most unnatural aspect of this environment is the jacket that these animals are forced to wear. This device is used to protect the apparatus that delivers the addictive drugs. How do they react?

“Hair plucked from side of head . . . again plucking hair on head . . . keeping head and side of neck plucked bald.” “Banging, shaking cage, tearing at jacket. . . . Ripping jacket.” The picture that these words conjure up is an animal that is raging against the cage, fighting the pain, not giving up. This monkey is still trying to end the suffering. This animal still has hope.

Not all are so lucky. Years of confinement can break the spirit of even the strongest. When addictive drugs like amphetamines are forced upon these victims, their minds are distorted beyond a point of no return. They lose their minds, their will to fight, they lose hope. They have nothing left. The words that describe these animals are quieter, less fierce, inactive. They have surrendered.

“Holding tail and lying down. . . . Holding tail and lying down. . . . Still holding tail. . . . Lying down. . . . Lying down. . . . Lying down.” There is no hope here, no will to live, no fierceness. Life continues without living. We have taught them despair, misery, desolation and hopelessness. We have shared our mental illnesses with them. The only thing that we haven’t taught them is suicide. I suppose that we want to ensure that their suffering is inescapable.

We have visited our self-abuse on them and now they return it to us. Their psyches are so deprived, their suffering is so absolute, their minds so tortured that we have even destroyed their ability to move. “Holding tail and lying down.” They try vainly to give themselves some comfort. They hold onto the only thing available to them that is not artificial – themselves. This is abject victimhood.

Now you know. This information, these horrible words, these terrifying facts all come from one lab in Virginia. This lab is not unique. Monkeys – rhesus, squirrel monkeys and others are subjected to the throes of these and other addictive drugs at Harvard, Wake Forest, McLean Hospital, University of Michigan, on and on and on. Tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of monkeys, decades of despair.

And now we have something in common – you and I. We have a choice to make. Which monkey will you be? Either choice could be justified. Action or desolation, anger or depression, giving up or fighting back. We can either lie on the floor or we can tear at the jacket.

Knowledge has a price. The choice is not easy. These words are painful. The images that they conjure can sap your will. They can bring up rivers of tears. They can drown your soul in waves of desolation. We can become another set of victims, shipwrecked in our pain for these animals. But desolation will not empty these cages. Despair will not lead to freedom. Anguish will not result in liberty. But anger will. Tear at the jacket.

If you can only write, send letters to the people who visit this pain on these animals. You have a right to express your opinion, because your tax dollars pay for these experiments. Demand that the experiments end. Insist that the funding be directed to clinical research. If you need to do more – protest. Organize activists to take to the streets. The vivisectors that perpetrate these abuses do not enjoy seeing their names on picket signs. If you can do more, do so. Investigate labs, find the truth, and expose it. Speak up. Be a voice for the animals. Give voice to their suffering, and the pain that it brings to you.

The choice is yours. Cling to hope or give up. Fight for what is right, or allow the suffering to spread. Stand on the sidelines or take to the streets.
Lie down, or tear at the jacket.

ANIMAL TORTURE

InVivo Therapeutics Corp. recently sued the Oregon Health and Science University, alleging that the rhesus monkeys InVivo purchased were defective. Apparently, many of the monkeys — which were slated for spinal cord experiments – did not survive the surgery that was supposed to prepare them for their ordeal. InVivo had to abandon its project and is seeking damages.

There is much one could say about this but I choose to focus on the way the story was covered in the Boston Herald. The lede states that the monkeys had to suffer in the name of medical science but that InVivo did not expect the monkeys to have to suffer more than necessary. Hence the lawsuit.

This is just nonsense. InVivo intended to mutilate and torment the monkeys until the monkeys died. What happened here is that the monkeys died before they could be tortured sufficiently. InVivo seeks damages for that lost opportunity.

Assuming InVivo’s allegations are true, I have three questions: 1) Who’s the victim here? Who does the law say is the victim here? Last, why are the anwers to those two questions different?

USA- Missouri hospital abandons use of cats after protest

A northwest Missouri hospital is switching to high-tech mannequins for medical training classes after an animal rights group protested its use of live cats.

A spokeswoman for Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph said Monday the hospital will hold its first class using the $46,000 mannequins on Sept. 30. The classes teach health care workers how to place a tube down an infant's throat to help the baby breathe.

The hospital had previously used cats, whose throats are similar to that of a human infant.

Why the secrecy?

One reason for the secrecy might be the university's own fear that the public reaction to a fair look at the details of the lives and fate of the animals purchased or bred for use in the university's labs could cause a significant reduction in public support and might lead to a loss of funding. The university doesn't really believe that it has the public's support.

There must be other reasons, but the recognition that what is being done in the labs is beyond the norms of public acceptance seems to be the common reason that laboratories across the nation work so hard to keep the details of the animals' lives as secret as possible.

Since writing about the videotapes above, the situation has been resolved. The UW announced that as soon as legally permissible after our requests, they destroyed these videos. In fact, they destroyed not just the videos we had requested, but 60 boxes of videos. These videos must have been absolutely damning.

Marshall Farms, like Ridglan Farms, part of HARLAN SPRAGUE DAWLEY breeds dogs for vivisectors. In Madison, the largest consumer of dogs is Covance, which reported using 5,134 dogs in 2007. The University of Wisconsin - Madison reported using 421 dogs in 2004. I don't know how many they are using today.

If dogs were toasters, or even carrots, the things being done to them in these labs would have no ethical or moral implications, but, as Stanley Coren points out, they're not.

Experimenting on dogs is like experimenting on young children; not infants who might not be able to grasp that someone means them harm, but two-and-a-half-year-old toddlers, who are able to add one and one and come to the conclusion that monsters are hurting them, even if they can't imagine why. And what else could people who would hurt dogs or young children be called but monsters?

Aside from the outrageous cruelty taking place with all this ("incubating" the virus in the kidneys of living monkeys, for example), there's another disturbing fact that has surfaced in all this: The patent for this process is held not just by the National Institutes of Health, but by another private corporation known as DynCorp

This, of course, brings up the obvious question: Who is Dyncorp? And why do they hold a patent on live attenuated vaccine production using African Green Monkeys?

DynCorp, it turns out, is a one of the top private military contractors working for the U.S. government. Jane Bürgermeister has filed bioterrorism charges against pharmaceutical giants like Novartis International AG, based in Basel, Switzerland, Baxter AG, based in Austria, and its parent company, Baxter International in Deerfield, Illinois. Guess who is providing much of the swine flu vaccine for mass inoculation - Baxter International and Novartis.

This is the same Baxter International that sent bird flu virus to European laboratories 'by mistake' earlier this year and it was mixed with a seasonal flu virus to create a much more dangerous strain.

Last year at least 81 people were killed by Baxter International's contaminated blood-thinning product, heparin, which was made in China from, among other things, pig intestines. Isn't pharmaceutical medicine wonderful? The contaminated heparin also seriously injured hundreds of people and it was revealed that the factory of Baxter's Chinese supplier had never been inspected by either American or Chinese public 'protection' agencies.

More than 50 dialysis patients died in 2001 because of faults with Baxter International equipment, and this month Baxter Healthcare Corporation, a subsidiary of Baxter International, reached an out-of-court settlement of two million dollars with the State of Kentucky. Baxter had been caught inflating the cost of intravenous drugs sold to Kentucky Medicaid by as much as 1,300 per cent.

The drug companies have even been given immunity from prosecution from death or injury from the vaccine in a document signed by Obama's Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius.

Baxter International said it will be shipping swine flu vaccine worldwide by the end of July and the potential profits are fantastic; but this is not primarily about money. It about a long-planned mass-culling of the human population.

MOLECULAR 'NOSE' COULD SMELL OUT DANGER DRUGS

Scots scientists are developing a pioneering "nose" which will help cut
the time it takes to develop new medicines.The device uses 1,000 tiny
sensors to detect how human cells react to new drugs far quicker than
conventional methods.And it could cut the need to test on animals as it
will quickly weed out drugs which are toxic.It can quickly predict which
drugs will cause side-effects so scientists do not need to waste time
developing a drug which is likely to fail when it reaches clinical trials.
They hope the molecular nose will slash the time it takes to develop new
drugs, which can take up to 15 years.It works by assessing how a human
cell responds to particular drugs and recording the pattern of responses,
or signature pattern. When drugs cause side-effects such as headaches,
dizziness or liver toxicity, there is a signature pattern for each one.If
scientists test a new drug and see the signature pattern for a certain
side-effect come up, they will know the drug is not viable and discard
it.They hope to build up a huge bank of signature patterns so that they
can recognise any potential ill-effects when they test a new
medicine.Professor Walter Kolch of Glasgow University said: "With the
molecular nose, you could take a number of drugs that have known
side-effects and establish the signature patterns for them which can
therefore be avoided. The nose will also identify the signature patterns
of successful drugs which new drugs can imitate."This would create an
efficient pre-screening system for drug development."He added: "If we
accumulate signature patterns we can compare new drugs against that
database."Prof Kolch said that only one in 30 drugs tested in clinical
trials are finally approved for use on patients. It is hoped the nose
could cut the failure rate and the cost of drug tests by predicting early
on which drugs are likely to fail.The nose is being developed by
scientists at Glasgow and Strathclyde universities, who hope to have it
ready for use within four years.

(India) 3000 animal replaced in experiments

The annual use of over 3000 animals has been replaced with alternatives at a higher education institute in the Indian state of Gujarat. InterNICHE Partners the Gujarat Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) confirmed this week that Bhavnager University has agreed to end the use of over 3000 mice, rats and rabbits for dissections and severe experiments in pharmacology, biochemistry, zoology and health science education.

The alternative that will replace the many pharmacology experiments is the CAL Pharmacology Compilation, produced by Dr R Raveendran. This software was produced with grant funding from the InterNICHE Humane Education Award, a program sponsored by Dutch anti-vivisection organisation Proefdiervrij. The Award has supported humane education initiatives from teachers and others internationally, facilitating direct replacement of animal experiments in education and training.

The CAL Pharmacology Compilation was launched as freeware, enabling it to
be freely duplicated. Over 4000 copies have been distributed across India by InterNICHE and its collaborators, including the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, and many more copies have been made locally.

Snehal Bhavsar from the GSPCA, the prime mover in achieving the curricular transformation at Bhavnager University, has been encouraging colleges and universities across Gujarat to abandon experiments in education, with success rooted in her strategic and tactical skills. In her role as CPCSEA nominee across much of the state, she is able to place demands on universities, as well as on companies involved in research and testing on animals.

The CPCSEA is the Indian government agency that supervises animal experimentation. It is often described as inefficient and careless at the central level, but sometimes highly effective at the local and regional level, such as in Gujarat.

Changes in the requirements for education issued by the Indian government and applied by CPCSEA nominees have played a major role in changes away from animal experiments too. The CPCSEA Guidelines address dissection in zoology and other science courses.

Dissection and experiments at the basic level of bachelor degrees were made non-compulsory in 2006. However, curricular regulations from the ‘outside examiners’ working for the Indian government’s Department of Education still demanded dissection at this point of time, so a conflict had been created. Aware that the dissection was not truly necessary, and considering the cost and extra requirements for all work with animals, the teachers themselves co-operated to successfully lobby the Department to remove dissection from the curriculum for the whole country. The change had impact at university level but also in the last few remaining secondary schools that were still doing dissections (most dissections at secondary level had stopped by 2001).

As well as addressing basic education, the Guidelines promote the ‘4Rs’ of reduction, replacement, refinement and rehabilitation at MSc level and for research and testing. Requests in protocols sent to the CPCSEA in Gujarat for animal use by lower MSc students are now rejected.

Permission for most experiments at Karamsab AR Pharmacology College, for example, has been withdrawn: not only are the experiments effectively no longer allowed, but the college has insufficient space for an animal house of the ‘high’ standards now required. Only higher MSc animal use is allowed, and this is for ‘mild’ experiments only. The killing of healthy animals after experiments at all levels has now been severely curtailed, and their rehabilitation costs must now be paid for.

There is a growing number of private colleges with high numbers of animals used in their MSc courses, but many are not registered with the CPCSEA as they should be, and so do not have the same checks by nominees as government establishments do.

In another approach to achieving change, CPCSEA nominees demanded quarterly statistical reports about animals bred and used by pharmaceutical testing companies in Gujarat. Analysis of the data showed a discrepancy: companies were breeding so-called ‘excess’ animals who were not used and were instead donated free to colleges and universities. This practice was therefore stopped, thereby cutting the supply of free animals to educational establishments across the state.

At the same time, the cost of computers has been decreasing, so some educational establishments consider that if they would now have to pay for animals, and struggle to meet the strict requirements, it may be wise to invest in buying hardware and using alternatives instead.

By demanding that educational and research and testing establishments have their own animal house – and well-equipped with suitable maintenance, climate control and other conditions - the level of practical and ethical standards concerning animal breeding and use that must be met has also increased. As a result, some establishments no longer apply for clearance by the CPCSEA in the state, and the experiments are abandoned.

From 2004, animal use in education was already significantly and constantly decreasing across Gujarat. This was a direct result, according to Snehal Bhavsar, of the two-fold approach employed: information provision, outreach work and training in alternatives provided by InterNICHE, and her own sustained engagement with and pressure on establishments on the issue.

An InterNICHE speaking tour in 2003 took the message of full replacement and the evidence of superior student performance when using alternatives to 22 locations right across India. 1600 copies of the InterNICHE book and database ‘from Guinea Pig to Computer Mouse’ (2nd ed.) were distributed at the same time. Meetings were also held between InterNICHE and the academic councils and CPCSEA.

In 2004 over 400 university teachers were trained at events in 10 cities in India in the largest training event of its nature ever held worldwide. The ‘Alternatives, Animal Welfare and the Curriculum’ series of seminars was organised by InterNICHE and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) in conjunction with many committed local organisations across the country. The GSPCA was the local organiser in Gujarat.

Travel support was provided to senior university officials, heads of department and research students to attend the day-long seminars. Teams of teacher trainers self-trained and then demonstrated in detail a range of alternative tools chosen according to the Indian curricula for different disciplines. Many of the tools were provided by the InterNICHE Alternatives Loan System. Others, such as calf anatomy models, were Indian-made. Teachers and others have since been requesting of the GSPCA and InterNICHE further training in alternatives.

As Snehal Bhavsar continues to address humane education, complaints from students to her in her role as GSPCA representative and CPCSEA nominee about harmful animal use have guided efforts for a targeted increase of pressure at specific establishments.

Moreover, half of Gujarat’s population is Jain, a religion where the value of non-violence towards people and animals is specifically acknowledged, and this is impacting positively on the process of change. Historically, some Jain academics have advised followers not to enter medicine and related fields because of the dissection and vivisection that might be expected of students. As far as civil rights are concerned, those with religious or otherwise deeply held convictions concerning the integrity of life should be able to enter all fields of study. The replacement of the 3000 animals at Bhavnager University is highly significant and a major success for campaigners. However, it is dwarfed by the changes in education across the whole of Gujarat, which comprise an 80% reduction of animal use in many courses over the past 12 months. This translates to replacement of over 10,000 animals, achieved in a state where animal use in research and testing is one of the highest in India.

O homem poderá um dia fazer uma vida normal com um coração ou um fígado «doado» por um porco ou um chimpanzé, mas até lá «há muito trabalho a fazer» para garantir a segurança do xenotransplante.
A ideia foi defendida, sexta-feira, em Viana do Castelo, por Margarida Correia Neves, professora da Escola de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade do Minho e investigadora de Imunologia no Instituto de Investigação em Ciências da Vida e da Saúde, durante um jogo-debate sobre xenotransplante, ou seja, transplante de órgão de animais para seres humanos.

Segundo aquela investigadora, actualmente «já se faz em qualquer lado» o transplante para pessoas de pequenas partes de órgãos de animais, como válvulas cardíacas ou vasos sanguíneos, sobretudo do porco mas também, em alguns casos, da vaca.

No entanto, ainda não se conseguiu o transplante, com êxito, de um órgão inteiro, apesar de alguns ensaios já efectuados.

«Num dos casos, o receptor aceitou o fígado de um primata, a cirurgia correu bem, mas a pessoa acabou por morrer de infecções», referiu Margarida Neves.

O problema, explicou, é que para se fazer um xenotransplante «é necessário reduzir muito a resposta imunitária» do receptor, que assim fica muito mais vulnerável e mais sujeito a contrair infecções.

«Há muito trabalho ainda a fazer para se conseguir efectuar um xenotransplante com segurança», frisou.

Disse que, sobre este assunto, há as mais díspares teses, havendo alguns investigadores que são «extremamente optimistas» e que acreditam que será possível fazer um xenotransplante brevemente, enquanto que outros garantem que ainda haverá 20 ou 30 anos pela frente «até lá chegar».

O xenotransplante poderá dar uma ajuda no combate às listas de espera, mas Margarida Correia Neves acredita que as pessoas só o usarão em último recurso, até porque hoje em dia há cada vez mais «correcções artificiais» em materiais sintéticos, nomeadamente corações.

«Se perguntar a uma pessoa se prefere o coração de um porco ou um coração artificial em material sintético, a resposta parece óbvia. As pessoas têm medo do xenotransplante e com razão, porque é menos seguro e exige uma redução muito maior da resposta imunitária», referiu.

«Há vários vírus que entraram na população humana que vêm dos animais, como é claramente o caso do vírus da ébola. O próprio vírus da Sida é muito discutível se veio ou não dos animais», lembrou.

Reconheceu ainda haver uma «relutância natural» das pessoas em receber órgãos de animais, da mesma forma que há 30 anos «a fertilização 'in vitro' era vista como uma coisa horrorosa, a gente achava que ia nascer um Frankenstein. Hoje em dia, conhece alguém que ainda tenha medo?», questionou.

Por isso, defendeu que as investigações na área do xenotransplante devem prosseguir e manifestou-se convicta de que a ciência acabará por encontrar cada vez melhores resposta, a exemplo do que aconteceu com os avanços no tratamento do cancro da mama e da Sida.

Margarida Correia Neves não fugiu às questões de ética animal que o xenotransplante poderá levantar, mas criticou aqueles que por um lado acham que não se deve usar para investigações que podem salvar uma vida, e por outro comem ovos ou carne de produção industrial.

«A questão é saber se o homem é ou não um ser superior e tem ou não direito a usar animais. Se aceitarmos que tem, acho muito mais nobre usar animais para investigação, para conseguir vacinas novas, medicamentos novos, órgãos novos e salvar uma vida, do que usá-los para produção industrial de carne, que não é essencial à vida», rematou.

Actions such as these against companies still dealing with the cruel and fraudulent company, have been occurring around the world in increasing frequency, and it appears that animal activists have not given up the campaign to force Huntingdon Life Sciences to end animal testing; a global campaign against the laboratory began seven years ago. There have been several articles recently in the Oregonian about OHSU’s primate center. The big news is that PETA has had someone working undercover at the center for the last four months who has documented ongoing animal abuse and sloppy science.

OHSU has responded with the usual lies followed by a press release about an alleged “breakthrough” in their cloning experiments. As usual, the Oregonian has printed OHSU’s unsubstantiated claims as if they were facts. Especially amusing is animal experimenter Michael Conn’s claim that “We are an open facility”. In Defense of Animals has had to sue OHSU twice for public documents that the center refused to share. (IDA won both times). Let’s use this as an opportunity for letters to the editor. Let’s counter OHSU’s lies and point out that a “breakthrough” in animal experimentation is not, as Andy Dworkin writes, a “medical advance”.

The activist group will formalize its accusations against the Hillsboro facility today
For the second time in a decade, an animal-rights activist has slipped past employment screeners at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, taken a job as a monkey handler and accused the facility of routinely abusing animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a national animal-rights group, planted one of its undercover investigators at the Hillsboro center from April 9 to July 25, officials at the nonprofit told The Oregonian.

The investigator, whom neither PETA nor the primate center would identify, took a job as an animal husbandry technician and secretly took notes and shot video to document her complaints. PETA will formalize her accusations today in a complaint to federal regulators.
"We are an open facility," declared Michael Conn, the associate director and acting head of the primate center's Department of Animal Resources, in a response Monday. Regulators have inspected the primate center three times since February, finding the facility in full compliance with federal law, he said. "There are no secrets here."

In 1999, the American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) was instrumental in aiding the development of the Chimpanzee Health Improvement, Maintenance, and Protection (CHIMP) Act, legislation that established a retirement system for chimpanzees no longer needed in research. After passing both the House and Senate by unanimous consent, the final version of the bill was signed into law in December 2000. Unfortunately, the bill did not call for the permanent retirement of chimpanzees and permitted the removal of chimps for use in research if certain criteria were met.

However, early this year, Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), along with Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA), introduced the Chimp Haven is Home Act (S.1916 & H.R.3295), which would make chimpanzee retirement permanent. Specifically, the bill aims to modify "the sanctuary system for surplus chimpanzees by terminating the authority for the removal of chimpanzees from the system for research purposes."

Latest statistics published by the European Commission1 hide the fact that Britain still experiments on more animals than any other EU member state, despite Home Office assurances that animals are only used when absolutely necessary. Charity campaigners the Dr Hadwen Trust say Britain’s record as the animal testing capital of Europe is shameful and should be a wake-up call for urgent action.

The Commission reported that across Europe a total of 12.1 million animal experiments are conducted each year. Although discrepancies in the way the Commission collates statistics put Britain second lead behind France, closer analysis by the Dr Hadwen Trust reveals that in fact Britain remains at the top of the league table with 3 million animal experiments2 . Europe’s combined laboratory animal use has increased by 3.2% since 20023 with no trend of decline and the use of supposedly protected species such as non-human primates remains unacceptably high.

“It is to our shame that Britain remains the animal testing capital of Europe.” says the Dr Hadwen Trust’s Wendy Higgins, “This is a sad indictment of the government’s utter failure to reduce laboratory animal suffering. Home Office assurances that animals are only used when absolutely necessary ring hollow when in the 21st century we still kill more animals in laboratories than any other European country.”

Pharmaceutical company acknowledges 'unacceptable' treatment of lab monkeys

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. acknowledged Wednesday that animal handling practices in its laboratory were "unacceptable" in several incidents that brought a $20,060 fine from the U.S. Department of Agriculture last year.
The incidents occurred in 2004 and included the death of a rhesus monkey that was mistakenly steam-washed and severe burns to the pads of another monkey that led to the amputation of several of the animal's digits.
Boehringer issued a statement Wednesday attributed to the company as a whole.

Se um pesquisador propusesse testar um medicamento para idosos utilizando como modelo moças de vinte anos; ou testar os benefícios de determinada droga para minimizar os efeitos da menopausa utilizando como modelo homens, certamente haveria um questionamento quanto à cientificidade de sua metodologia.

Isso porque assume-se que moças não sejam modelos representativos da população de idosos e que rapazes não sejam o melhor modelo para o estudo de problemas pertinentes às mulheres. Se isso é lógico, e estamos tratando de uma mesma espécie, por que motivo aceitamos como científico que se teste drogas para idosos ou para mulheres em animais que sequer pertencem à mesma espécie?

Por que aceitar que a cura para a Aids esteja no teste de medicamentos em animais que sequer desenvolvem essa doença? E mesmo que o fizessem, como dizer que a doença se comporta nesses animais da mesma forma que em humanos? Mesmo livros de bioterismo reconhecem que o modelo animal não é adequado.

Dados experimentais obtidos de uma espécie não podem ser extrapolados para outras espécies. Se queremos saber de que forma determinada espécie reage a determinado estímulo, a única forma de fazê-lo é observando populações dessaa espécie naturalmente recebendo esse estímulo ou induzi-lo em certa população.

Induzir o estímulo esbarra no problema da ética e da cientificidade. Primeira pergunta: será que é certo, será que é meu direito pegar indivíduos e induzir neles estímulos que naturalmente não estavam incidindo sobre eles? Segunda pergunta: será que é científico, se o organismo receber um estímulo induzido, de maneira diferente à forma como ele naturalmente se daria, será ele modelo representativo da condição real?

Ratos não são seres humanos em miniatura. Drogas aplicadas em ratos não nos dão indícios do que acontecerá quando seres humanos consumirem essas mesmas drogas. Há algumas semelhanças no funcionamento dos sistemas de ratos e homens, é claro, somos todos mamíferos, mas essas semelhanças são paralelos. Não se pode ignorar as diferenças, as muitas variáveis que tornam cada espécie única. Essas diferenças, por menores que pareçam, são tão significativas que por vezes produzem resultados antagônicos.

Testes realizados em ratos não servem tampouco para avaliar os efeitos de drogas em camundongos. Isso porque apesar de aparente semelhança, ambas as espécies possuem vias metabólicas bastante diferentes. Diferenças metabólicas não são difíceis de encontrar nem mesmo dentro de uma mesma espécie, admite-se que as drogas presentes no mercado são efetivas apenas para 30-50% da população humana.

Na prática o que acontece é que um rato pode receber uma dose de determinada substância e metabolizá-la de maneira que ela se biotransforme em um composto tóxico. A toxicidade mata o rato, mas no ser humano essa droga poderia ser inócua, quem sabe a resposta para uma doença severa. Por outro lado, o teste em ratos pode demonstrar a segurança de uma droga que no ser humano se demonstre tóxica.

Centenas de drogas testadas e aprovadas em animais foram colocadas no mercado para uso por seres humanos e precisaram ser recolhidas poucos meses após, por haverem sido identificados efeitos adversos à população. Se as pesquisas com animais realmente pudessem prever os efeitos de drogas a seres humanos, esses eventos não teriam ocorrido. Dessa forma, pode-se inferir que a pesquisa que utiliza animais como modelo não só não beneficia seres humanos, como também potencialmente os prejudica.

O modelo de saúde que defendemos é aquele que valoriza a vida humana e animal. Os interesses da indústria farmacêuticas e das instituições de pesquisa que lucram com a experimentação animal não nos dizem respeito. Buscamos por soluções reais para problemas reais.

Os maiores progressos em saúde coletiva se deram através de sucessivas mudanças no estilo de vida das populações. Há uma forte co-relação entre nossa saúde e o estilo de vida que levamos. Se nosso estilo de vida é dessa ou daquela forma, isso reflete em nossa saúde. Está claro que as doenças sejam reflexo, em grande parte, de nosso estilo de vida e que a cura deva estar em correções nesses hábitos.

PETA infiltrates primate center

For the second time in a decade, an animal-rights activist has slipped past employment screeners at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, taken a job as a monkey handler and accused the facility of routinely abusing animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a national animal-rights group, planted one of its undercover investigators at the Hillsboro center from April 9 to July 25, officials at the nonprofit told The Oregonian.

The investigator, whom neither PETA nor the primate center would identify, took a job as an animal husbandry technician and secretly took notes and shot video to document her complaints. PETA will formalize her accusations today in a complaint to federal regulators

France and Britain biggest laboratory animal users in EU

Shame to France and UK

New statistics on animal use in the EU over 2005 show that France and Britain are still experimenting on more animals than any other EU country. The statistics show that France uses the highest numbers of animals, but in the EU statistics the use of GM animals are not included. The UK statistics show over 3 million procedures including GM breeding animals.

Primate use went up slightly (over 10,000 in total of which one third used in France) and the number of dogs as well. Over 6 million mice were used and the number of hamsters used increased by 40%. The only country in the EU that does not carry out any animal experimentation is Malta.

Dr Hadwen's Trust Ms Wendy Higgins commented 'with over 12 million laboratory animals still dying, this is a wake-up call to European politicians that urgent action is needed. The UK often prides itself for the most stringent legislation on the use and protection of laboratory animals in the world, and the Home Office assures that tests are only carried out on animals when alternatives are not available. However, in practice most research proposals involving animals are accepted by the Animal Ethics Committee and shockingly, a study shows that many researchers don't even know that by law they have to demonstrate that an alternative method was not available.

Animals Count wants the UK Government to:

Immediately ban the harmful use of all non-human primates in experiments.

Ban all harmful use of animals in scientific research, toxicity testing and education.

Establish an independent transparent scientific inquiry to thoroughly review the ethical, scientific and economic implications of scientific research, toxicity testing and education.

Facilitate increased funding for the development, validation and implementation of non-animal alternatives.

The national March and Rally to the labs at Huntingdon next month will be the first such march for several years. Protests have been limited to 50 people, once a week, after HLS obtained a temporary High Court Order.
Earlier this year, the Order was finally granted to HLS, but the terms were varied, allowing for the return of large demonstrations at the site, as well as the use of megaphones during protests.

However the ban on large protests at the sites did not succeed in any way in stopping the campaign. In fact in the face of this repression the campaign to shut down the labs has continued to grow, and has now become a global phenomenen, unprecedented in the history of the movement.

Indeed this is a campaign which under normal circumstances would have been
successful several times over. The UK government has repeatedly stepped in
and used hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers money to bail out HLS.
The government now provides banking and insurance facilities for HLS, the
only company in the world with access to such priveleges.

Many have asked us why the government is going to such lengths to keep this
digraced and discredited company in business. It is no coincidence and no
secret that the government has for many years been funded by a small band of
wealthy biotech and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs such as David Sainsbury and
Christopher Evans. It is widely accepted now that in exchange for these huge
donations, these people received honours (both Sainsbury and Evans became
Lords) and even political power in exchange for these huge donations (the
so-called "Cash for honours" scandal). However there has been a lesser known
payback; the massive input of resources, the hundreds of millions of tax
payers' money, spent on defending the biotech and vivisection industry.

And despite all this, HLS remains $100 million in debt, and doesn't even own
its buildings. Only 2% of HLS shares are currently being traded, and even
then only on an obscure and little used trading scheme, since all the major
stock exchanges still refuse to list them. Even the very few companies who
recentl bought shares in the company, are now getting rid of their shares
just as quickly. Recent large investors who have been added to the long,
long list of companies who have stopped dealing with HLS include some of the
biggest names in international finance, such as Dresdner/Allianz, Deutche
Bank, Robeco and BNP Paribas.

Yet in recent weeks, HLS bosses have been claiming in the media and to
anyone who will listen that the Shac campaign is over, while at the same
time still whingeing that no companies are prepared to invest in the
company. This is a blatant example of wishful thinking on the part of HLS
management. The truth is that despite all the resources and the millions
spent defending and shoring up this disgraced and nasty company, HLS is as
bankrupt and dependent on government handouts as it ever was.

Hence the recent attempts by the authorities to shut down the Shac campaign
by other means, by the use of massive police raids on premises across the
country and even abroad, by the widespread confiscation of large amounts of
campaign materials and personal property, by the targeting and repression of
the campaign organisers, the imprisoning of some, the strict bail conditions mimposed on others.

But all their efforts have failed again. The number of protests and actions
since the crackdown has actually increased, and even more countries have
joined the campaign, and even more companies have ditched HLS.

It's vital that on Saturday November 10th we send a clear and unmistakable
message to HLS and their collaborators, that we turn up in huge numbers,
that we stand shoulder to shoulder to with those Shac campaigners who cannot
be there for unavoidable reasons. We must not fail them or the animals.

FRANKLIN — A former scientist for Huntingdon Life Sciences claims in a lawsuit that supervisors at the animal-testing laboratory pressured him into falsifying research data then fired him after he refused.

Samuel R. Onanuga, 48, of Union Township, also claims Huntingdon illegally withheld overtime payments from him and discriminated against him because he is black. Onanuga was a $41,000-a-year senior scientist with the company, which has a research laboratory on Mettlers Road in Franklin, until his dismissal in 2005.

Huntingdon, in an answer to the complaint filed in Superior Court, Elizabeth in August, has denied Onanuga's allegations.

The attorney who filed the answer, Richard Flaum of Warren Township, declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Calls to the company Friday were not returned.

Named in the lawsuit is Huntingdon, Onanuga's supervisor at the time; Kay Saladdin, and Barbara Litzenberger, a director at Huntingdon.

Calls left on company voice mail for both women were not returned.

Onanuga claims Huntingdon violated federal and state labor laws and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. He is also claiming wrongful discharge and breach of contract and is seeking back pay, lost-pension credits and unspecified punitive damages.

According to the law suit, supervisors gave in to pressure to alter data on research of drugs and chemicals so the company could continue testing and billing for it.

"At Huntingdon, particularly in the Formulation Chemistry Department, pressure for positive results caused other scientists in the department to relent to pressure to change data," the lawsuit reads. "In 2005, the institutional culture at Huntingdon was to increase profit margin."

In July 2005, Saladdin told Onanuga to change his interpretation of research data to show a test resulted in a success instead of the actual failure, according to the lawsuit. He refused and was fired in August 2005 without explanation, Onanuga claims in the law suit.

He worked at the company for 14 years and was promoted regularly until 2003, rising from research associate to senior scientist, according to the complaint.

Huntingdon failed to pay Onanuga overtime despite the fact that he was not a supervisor, although it continued to pay overtime to nonblack employees, the lawsuit charges.

The company paid him less than nonblack employees and also promoted a scientist with less experience and seniority than Onanuga who was not black, passing over him, the law suit alleges.

Onanuga's attorney, Kevin Carlin of Hamilton, said Friday that Onanuga's claim regarding overtime "is part of a nationwide tussle over fair pay."

He added: "Management cannot unilaterally determine that a particular position is exempt from overtime requirements of state and federal law."

Huntingdon has been the focus of animal-rights protests over the company's testing procedures.

Protests against the research facility, which tests drugs on monkeys, mice and beagles, began in 1997 after an activist working there videotaped what she called abuse of animals.

The publicity surrounding the case prompted actress Kim Bassinger to lead protests, which resulted in the cancelation of testing for an osteoporosis drug and the release of 40 beagles to be used on those tests.
